Lava stone or soapstone? Watch out for confusion in the industry

The error of compound names: why “soapstone lava” does not exist
Many vendors use these names only to intercept more online searches, mixing materials that have diametrically opposed properties. This is technical nonsense:
- Soapstone (or Saponaria) is a soft metamorphic rock composed largely of talc and magnesium.
- Lavic Stone is an effusive magmatic rock, born from the cooling of volcanic magma.
Mixing names is not only inaccurate, it generates misinformation for the buyer who is looking for a specific and durable product.
Cuore Lavico’s choice: 100% Basalt from Etna
We at Cuore Lavico have chosen the path of transparency. We do not use fancy names because the quality of our raw material is certified by its very nature.
The stone you find on our site is 100% True Etna Lava Stone, scientifically classified as Basalt Lavic.
Etna Basalt is not a soft stone like soapstone. It is an extremely hard rock, resistant to high temperatures and temperature changes, quarried directly from the slopes of Europe’s most active volcano.
Comparison: Basalt Lava vs. Soapstone
| Feature | Soapstone (Saponaria) | Basalt lava |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Metamorphic rock | Volcanic magma from Etna |
| Resistance | Fragile, prone to cracking | Extremely hard and compact |
| Duration | Limited in time | Practically eternal |
How not to be fooled: the safe purchase checklist
Before making a plate purchase, always check these basic points:
- Is the origin specified? If the seller does not clearly mention Etna, this may be low-quality imported material.
- Is the name ambiguous? If you read mixed definitions such as “Lavica-Ollare,” the product is not clearly identified.
- Is it certified? Cuore Lavico guarantees the purity of the stone, handcrafted in Sicily and certified for food use.
